Milk Glass
First made in the 16th Century, Milk Glass found it's way to the streets (waterways) of Venice. Milk White or opaque glass that is formed into a variety shapes. See also jadeite glass.
Uranium Glass
Dating back to at least 79 AD, uranium was used as a coloring in glass. Becoming widely popular in the 19th Century when glassmakers found uranium allowed temper at high temperatures. Uranium use was curtailed during World War II when the government confiscated uranium for the Manhattan Project. Later, production in glass returned into the 2000's. Shined with a black light the uranium glows.
Vaseline Glass
The term 'Vaseline Glass' first arrived in the 1930's when the color of uranium glass took on the yellow-green color of Vaseline brand petroleum jelly at the time, which was only yellow. Also known to be called custard glass for the same pale yellow color of the glass.
Hobnail Glass
First introduced in 1939 on translucent glass in many forms, Hobnail glass is known by its pattern of raised knobs or studs. In 1950 milk glass began being formed with the Hobnail feature.
Jadeite Glass
Jadeite Glass is tableware made of jade-green milk glass. Popular in the 20th Century, first produced in the 1940's up to 1975 by a popular manufacturer. Sometimes confused with 'Jadite Glass' which is a semi-opaque pale green vaseline glass.
Crystal
Crystal form of glass is a variety of glass where lead is introduced in place of the calcium content of typical glass. The high refractive index of this form of glass gives it a higher spectra or medium of separation of light, as in a prism. Lead glass occurs as far back as 206 BC.
